What should you know?
Coffee, even without sugar, is often avoided before gallbladder and abdominal ultrasound because it may contract the gallbladder and stimulate the gastrointestinal tract. It may not matter for many other ultrasound examinations.
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves and does not use ionizing radiation. Preparation and examination time depend on the body area and the clinical question.

Diagnosis and the role of ultrasound
The radiologist selects the appropriate approach, examines the target structures in several planes, records measurements and uses Doppler when needed. Findings must be interpreted with symptoms and other clinical information.
- Organ size, shape and position
- Tissue texture and echogenicity
- Focal or diffuse changes
- Blood flow with Doppler when indicated
Ultrasound findings must be interpreted together with symptoms, examination and, when needed, laboratory or other imaging results. An image alone should not be used for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.
Treatment and next steps
For a morning abdominal scan, have coffee after the examination unless the clinic has given different instructions. Confirm preparation instructions with the clinic and do not stop essential medication unless your clinician tells you to.
Management is individual and depends on age, symptoms, imaging findings, other health conditions and pregnancy plans. Medication or a procedure should be selected with the appropriate clinician.
