What should you know?
Estimated fetal weight is calculated from head, abdominal and femur measurements and is not a direct weighing. There is an expected margin of error that varies with gestational age, fetal position and technical factors.
Pregnancy ultrasound answers specific clinical questions: it establishes pregnancy location and dating and evaluates fetal growth, anatomy, placenta, amniotic fluid and, when indicated, circulation.
Common symptoms and signs
- Head circumference or diameter
- Abdominal circumference as a key growth measure
- Femur length
- Percentile and interval growth trend
Diagnosis and the role of ultrasound
The scope depends on gestational age and indication. Standard measurements are used; Doppler is added when blood flow needs evaluation. Medical ultrasound should follow the ALARA principle.
- Pregnancy location, dating and number of fetuses
- Fetal heartbeat, growth and anatomy
- Placental position and amniotic fluid
- Umbilical and other Doppler studies when indicated
Ultrasound findings must be interpreted together with symptoms, examination and, when needed, laboratory or other imaging results. An image alone should not be used for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.
Treatment and next steps
A single weight estimate is less informative than growth trajectory, fluid and Doppler findings. A single measurement is not a diagnosis. The maternity clinician should interpret the result with gestational age, prior scans and maternal health.
Management is individual and depends on age, symptoms, imaging findings, other health conditions and pregnancy plans. Medication or a procedure should be selected with the appropriate clinician.
When is urgent care needed?
- Severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding
- Possible fluid leakage or regular painful contractions
- A marked reduction in fetal movement once movement is regularly felt
