What should you know?
A hemangioma is a common benign vascular liver lesion. A small lesion with a typical appearance is often incidental and may only need confident characterization or confirmation of stability.
Abdominal ultrasound is often a first-line test for abdominal pain, fullness, bloating or abnormal laboratory results. It evaluates the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, kidneys, spleen and visible portions of the pancreas.
Common symptoms and signs
- Often a well-defined bright lesion
- Accurate size and location are recorded
- Atypical appearance may require contrast MRI or CT
- Growth or symptoms warrant further assessment
Diagnosis and the role of ultrasound
The radiologist compares organ size and texture with expected findings and looks for stones, cysts, indirect signs of inflammation, duct dilatation or free fluid. Bowel gas can limit visualization of some areas.
- Liver, spleen and kidney size

- Visible parts of the pancreas
- Focal findings or free fluid
Ultrasound findings must be interpreted together with symptoms, examination and, when needed, laboratory or other imaging results. An image alone should not be used for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.
Treatment and next steps
Comparison with prior images is valuable; the radiologist and treating clinician select follow-up according to appearance and risk. Next steps depend on the report and symptoms and may include observation, laboratory tests, CT/MRI, endoscopy or specialist review.
Management is individual and depends on age, symptoms, imaging findings, other health conditions and pregnancy plans. Medication or a procedure should be selected with the appropriate clinician.

- Severe persistent pain, a rigid abdomen or fainting
- Jaundice, high fever or repeated vomiting
- Black stools, vomiting blood or sudden profound weakness
